Austin’s Northern Neighbors May Be City’s Best-Kept Secret

Austin is known for its weird and wonderful culture, but just a hop, skip and jump away, you can have the best of the Capital City in a community suited for those who love to live. Three of the fastest-growing suburbs in the country are just north and northwest of Austin. All of them are making headlines for their great livability, family-friendly fun and proximity to Austin. Read on to learn more about Georgetown, Leander and Round Rock.

Known as the place with “the most beautiful town square in Texas,” Georgetown has a small-town vibe, despite being one of the fastest-growing cities in America. The Victorian-themed square is a cheerful destination for holiday events or just to try a new winery, boutique or eatery. The city features easy access to major commuter routes such at I-35, Ronald Reagan Boulevard and the 183A toll road, making it a convenient jaunt into Austin for work or play.

Georgetown is also home to over 30 parks and 9 miles of scenic nature trails, as well as the family-friendly Inner Space Caverns, one of the best-preserved caves in Texas. The beautiful San Gabriel River meanders through town and feeds into Lake Georgetown, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reservoir where boating, fishing and camping are popular.

Though Leander was established in 1882, the town is now a booming, up-and-coming hotspot in the Austin-metro area, creating an exciting mix of old and new. Old Town Leander is home to fun local shops, breweries and restaurants. In the next few years, Leander is set to establish Northline, a dynamic mixed-use project featuring more than 127,000 square feet of retail space, along with commercial, residential and civic facilities.

The town also boasts a top-rated school district. Transportation from Leander to Austin is easy via the 183A toll road and the accessible Capital MetroRail. Leander is the only city outside of Austin where the MetroRail stops, a nod to Leander’s history as a railroad hub.

Round Rock is the self-proclaimed “Sports Capital of Texas” and offers plenty of recreational opportunities. Home to the Houston Astros’ Triple-A affiliate team, the Round Rock Express, Round Rock houses the Dell Diamond, as well as multiple world-class sports facilities. For the past two years, the city has even hosted the U.S. Quidditch Cup at Old Settlers Park. Old Settlers Park is a 645-acre scenic haven in the city with nature trails and children’s play areas, plus more than 40 picnic areas and a lake that is stocked by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Fish Hatchery.

Round Rock has also consistently been listed as one of the safest cities in the United States and has an award-winning school district.
